Australia's education system offers valuable opportunities for North American students lookig for an academic and personal challenge in an English-speaking school system that is compatible with their own. North American students are invited to enroll in full undergraduate and graduate award and degree program or one or two semester study abroad programs that can be tailored to meet the needs of individual students.
The Australian education system is highly regarded and internationally recognized. University entry is competitive and academic standards are high. All universities are considered "accredited" and are closely monitored by the Australian Governmentwhich has a strong commitment to the provision of quality higher education. All but 2 of the 39 universities are public insitutions are are government funded.
Based on the British university system, the three-year Bachelor's degree is the core of Australian university studies. Bachelor degrees generally comprise a number of set subjects or courses and a number of electives. For this reason and also because few Australians study out of state, Australian universities generally have a very wide range of course offerings at each year level.
The general format for most Australian university courses is a combination of lectures, tutorials, and lab for science and computing subjects. Lectures are usually held in large auditoriums and tutorial groups tend to be small to enable students to actively participate in their learning and develop personal contact with other students as well as their lecturer/tutor.
Study Abroad: |
This term applies to undergraduate level study which lasts for one or two semesters only. No degrees are obtained from the Australian school and in most cases credit is transferred back to a North American institution for completion of the degree. |
Undergraduate Degree: |
This term refers to the first degree obtained (a Bachelor's Degree) and is a full 3 or 4 year term of study. Only courses directly pertaining to the specific degree are taken. (no electives or general education courses are taken) |
Graduate Degrees: |
This term refers to any degree obtained after the Bachelor's. Generally, a Graduate Diploma or Certificate, Master's or PhD Degree. A Bachelor level degree is usually a requirement for graduate work. |
