I want to graduate from my North American university

Great! There is little you will experience during your university years that will be as rewarding as the period you spend studying in Australia.

We assume you are currently enrolled in a North American university. Check with your academic adviser and your major department to get their thoughts. They know what is involved in graduating and you want to be sure that the study you do in Australia fits into your overall plans.

Visit the International Education Office at your university. They know what programs will best fit your needs. There are programs covering a full year, one semester or just the summer. They will also have some ideas about scholarships and other sources of funding. Remember, they are going to be very important in helping you get the proper transcripts and credit for the overseas study. (Apart from the fun you will have in Australia, you probably still want to get some academic credit for the time!)

It can get a bit complicated and there are a lot of possibilities. To help simplify the process we have outlined the choices and provided links to a great deal of information. Surf these links and you will find most of what you need.

There are three ways you can go to Australia:

1. Formal exchange program:

Many North American universities have formal exchange agreements with Australian schools. In most cases they are only for their own students, although some will take students from other universities. These programs are limited since they generally require that about the same number of students from Australia come to your school each year. If accepted, you will probably enrol as usual at your home university but spend a semester or even a year at the cooperating university in Australia. Normally you will pay for your transportation and living expenses in Australia, but nothing extra in tuition fees. Your credits will be given directly on your home university transcript. This is the least expensive way to go.

  • If this is for you, see if your school has an exchange program to Australia.

2. Study Abroad program:

If your school does not have a formal exchange program, or if you are not accepted to that program, you may apply to one of several established Study Abroad programs. These are run by other universities or private organizations and they provide a full "package" which usually includes transportation, housing, full personal support in Australia and full tuition fees. These programs will issue a transcript of credit acceptable at your home university. The cost will be a higher than the exchange programs, but they will take good care of you.

  • If this is for you, check out the Study Abroad programs.

3. On your own:

If you want, you may apply directly to an Australian university. This will require a lot of work on your part and you better be sure the courses you take can be transferred back to your "home" university. Once accepted you are responsible for all expenses related to transportation, housing and your personal maintenance while in Australia. You will also be required to pay full tuition fees as an "out of country" student. This will cost you more than an exchange but less than a study abroad program.
