Where can we find help in getting Australian publications?

General information

Many publishers and sellers as well as collectors of books have a presence on the internet. You may locate a particular publisher or seller, search the "stacks" of bookstores, request a particular volume, and order express delivery of a book as well as conduct general correspondence all over the network. You will need to explore several of these sites before you find just what you want, but it is probably out there somewhere.

To start, you may want to explore some general indexes:

• One of the most extensive is the AAUP Combined Online Catalog/Bookstore, Association of American University Presses.
• A large alphabetical Index of sellers and publishers around the world.
• The Internet Book Information Center is a good starting point and provides many useful links.
• BookWire, provides extensive links to help you find a book or a dealer or a publisher. It includes a list of University Press and other publishers sites but none from Australia. Also gives a large list of booksellers, but again none from Australia. Another link from BookWire is an Index of other information related to booksellers and publishers.
• Another useful site is the List of publishers and sellers from Vanderbilt University.
• Prentice Hall has a searchable database.

Book Sellers

Unfortunately, most of the large booksellers on the network are outside Australia. Some do have access to large collections, however, and may be of help. A few of the larger ones:

• Amazon.com Books (use the search, there are a lot of books listed here!)

Australia - Booksellers

A few places are starting to come "on-line" from Australia. You might want to try these first:

• Australian Online Bookshop
• The Co-op Online Bookshop in Sydney has recently entered the computer-age. Our thanks to John Wells for pointing out this site. This is the actual Co-op Bookshop started at Sydney University and includes facilities for locating and ordering books.
• Cornstalk Bookshop, in Glebe, Sydney.
• Miriam Brown Bookseller has a good selection of used books. This is one of my "must" stops while in Canberra. Maintains a "want list" for customers and gives a sample stock list on the network.
• The Bookshelf, "Professional Book Suppliers", located in South Australia. Most of their branches are at TAFEs.
• Reed Interactive Bookshop. Mostly oriented to K-12 schools.
• Bookstores in Australia is a site maintained by a computer system administrator in the Department of Anatomy and Histology at Sydney University! Includes a text-only listing of numerous book shops (most in Sydney and Newcastle), a few with email addresses.

Australia - Interesting things

You should be aware that there is an active electronic publishing community in Australia. This is especially apparent in the many e-journals described in the indexes below:

• Australian electronic journals, a complete list from the National Library of Australia. The NLA is currently gathering a listing of Australian e-journals available by subscription.
  
• Directory of electronic journals in Australia, Univ of Penn, text file.
• The Man From Snowy River, has been "published" electronically over the network. (you may "download" the complete work, or view on-line, but the latter action takes a while!)
