Description:
The development and environmental history of Australia offer intriguing parallels to that of the western US. In both cases development pressures have had an effect on environmental quality. Two courses "Biogeography in an Australian Context" focusing on the distribution of plants and animals in space and time as determined by the interaction of geophysics, geology, climate and evolutionary history; and "Australian Environmental History" looking at climatic, cultural, political and economic forces that have shaped the Australian landscape from the period before known human settlement until the present. There will also be excursions planned as part of the courses.
